A Saturday Out with Jacob in Fatherhood on The Evolving Dad

Today was Melissa's first Saturday at work since she went on Maternity leave 2 years ago. So Jacob and I thought it would be a nice to pick her up at work, but instead of just picking her up, I drove down to near her work and then took Jacob for a ride on the subway. It wasn't a long ride, just from Dupont Station to Downsview and back down to Museum.
Jacob Loved it. Between looking out the window and enjoying a sandwich he couldn't get enough of riding the subway.
After the subway ride, I planned walking from Museum station to St. George and board a bus to get back to Melissa's work and to where the car was park. At first Jacob seemed happy walking outside, but after a few minutes he started looking back and saying train, train... So instead of walking we turned around and took the train. Once we got to St. George it was up the stairs and onto the waiting bus, and once again Jacob wanted to go back to the train. This time I didn't give in, and we took the bus to pickup Melissa. After Picking up Melissa we did some shopping, mostly for his birthday. I don't think We'll be able to have him with us when we go shopping for his presents next year. After shopping it was back home where Melissa took a nap while Jacob and I went for a ride.
Though Jacob seemed to enjoy the ride it was a little chilly while we were riding so we had the protective plastic down. Not to mention the swarms of nats that I kept riding through. So after a short ride we decided to stop at a park for some fun on the slide.
All and All it was a great day, everything except Melissa having to work that is.

Vista Failure in Technology on The Evolving Dad

Tonight I went to a friends place to help them get some data of an old computer. A simple process or so I thought. I started by putting there drive into my external drive bay and plugging into their shiny new vista computer. Every thing seemed great the disk was recognized but when we started to browse it looking for files we hit a snag. Vista said we didn't have permission to access to specific user folders and we required Administrator privileges, a quick verification and I thought we were good, but the My Documents folder wouldn't open. No matter what I did I couldn't get access, I went as far as trying to take ownership of the folder. The only problem was that there were so many files it took forever. Well I'm not sure how long it would have taken, I didn't wait for it. Instead, I downloaded PuppyLinux and used it to access the old drive and copy the files over. It worked but took a long time.

The one thing I was surprised by was how well the new PuppyLinux worked. It had full access to the NTFS drives, and even recognized the on board Wireless Card so I could surf while copying. All in all it was quite impressive. It still seems wrong that a simple 80 meg linux that runs from ram worked better then the behemoth that is vista. ^ TOP

A challenge to start the summer in General on The Evolving Dad

For the last 3 years I've been thinking of doing the Becel Heart & Stroke Ride. Two years ago I come close to registering but then life and laziness got in the way and I didn't do it. Last year was even worse, I never even got on my bike. So the ride wasn't in the cards. So this year I'm thinking, it might be the year to do it.

In the few weeks that I've had my bike out I've managed to go for rides a couple of days a week. Not as much as I wanted to, but It's felt good the few times I've been out. The one thing I'm looking forward to is more rides with the family, Jacob really likes riding in his trailer. Perhaps he can do the ride in his trailer, though It might be a little long for him.

After reviewing the website, I'm not sure if I should do it or not. So far I've got more questions then answers. Can I do a 25km, 50km or 75km ride? Is Melissa working? The way I figure it I have till the 15th to decided. If I'm not committed by then I'm not going to do it.

A New Computer Would be Nice in Spoony Barding on Words on a Virtual Page

I've decided to record "Bingle Jells" and make it available online, along with some other spoonerised songs I have yet to work out. Unfortunately the voice recording software I was looking at requires a better system than I have. *grrr* Oh well, the secondary computer will probably prove sufficient. Of course a Spoonerised winter song might not be a good one to put out in the spring, but since it's the only one I've figured out so far (Although there are verses I have yet to mangle with my bardic spoon) it seems like a good place to start.

And since someone will probably wonder which recording software I was looking at it's Audacity. ^ TOP

I accept the Challenge. in General on The Evolving Dad

Well I've been spending the last few months trying to get back to the consistent blogging I managed in November and December of last year. Even though I can now blog from anywhere I have yet to get into the rhythm that I had managed at the end of last year.  So I had been trying to challenge myself over the last few weeks, without telling anyone about. That didn't work, the only consistent posting I have had has been the Wordless Wednesday photos. So when Melissa launched her new blog (www.mamamelissa.com) with 7 posts in 6 days, I was a little jealous and this morning when she challenged me to see who could post everyday longer. At first I wasn't sure if I was up to it, but in the end as the title of this post indicates I decided to give it a go.

So let the challenge begin....

Working in the cloud. in General on The Evolving Dad

Last Monday I posted a video of Jacob on the swing. It was taken with my cell phone while we were at the park. The raw video was about a minute long, but I only wanted to share 30 seconds of it. So I needed to figure out how to edit it. I looked at the different programs on my computer and was disappointed to find I only had Windows Movie Maker, the basic video editor that ships with windows. I've used it a few times, it's ok to work with but it didn't the format my phone recorded in. So I was stuck. I either had to use the full video or find some other program to do my editing with.

I first thought of A.very.com which promises to be an online suite of tools, including video editing. Unfortunately the current only have Phoenix their image editor and Peacock a Computer algorithm-based pattern generator, the video editing application Starling isn't available yet. So I wondered it YouTube had the ability to edit video, it doesn't. I have since found some write ups on the web about a YouTube Remixer but can't seem to find the actual program. So I did a Google search and came up with Jumpcut. Now at the the time I wanted to post my video online and didn't really feel like comparing different tools. should add that once I found Jumpcut Now I'm not sure if there are other services out there .

The interface is simple and quite easy to use. Though it took me a while to figure out how to just use a portion of my video. As I was Working with a single video clip and really just wanting to crop it I didn't get a chance to work with many of the features, like transitions or audio tracks. I am planning to do something more with it over the next couple of days, I've been taking more video and will edit them together For a longer video.

Part of me found it strange that I uploaded my video to a remote server before bringing it back to edit in there flash based editor. It worked this time because I was dealing with the small cell phone video file(1 meg), I can't see uploading the much larger files that I get from our camcorder and editing them up there. But I wont rule it out either, the thought of editing video at all seemed unlikely even as I began experimenting with other online programs like word processors and editing picture editors.

For now I'm content with using online application for the occasional task, but day to day a locally installed application is still faster and more reliable, but I'm not sure how long that will remain true.

An evening in the park in General on The Evolving Dad

Today after dinner the family went out to the park.

First we went to the little park in front of our building. There Jacob ran around and climbed on the playground, and went down both slides a number of times. Then it was off to the playground in park across the street. There he had went down another slide before heading off to the swing.

Here is a short video of him on the swing.

After the swing it was back home for bed. It was a fun evening, I just wish I would have thought about taking video or pictures before we got to the slide. I'm not used to having a phone that I like the pictures it takes. Perhaps next time I'll go more. ^ TOP

Seal hunt 2 in General on Tom's Ostentatious Sports Blog

I can’t believe it has been a month since I have last posted on this blog. My homework from a creative writing class I am taking and hunting for a new apartment have conspired to deprive me of free time to blog. I am very please that my pro seal hunt post from a year ago is getting commented on, so that’s something. My feelings on the seal hunt haven’t changed.

Some quick comments on sports:

I was mucho happy to see BJ Ryan get the save in today’s Jays game.

I was mucho disappointed to see the Toronto Raptors lose to the Detroit Pistons backups.

Didn’t the Toronto FC play today? For that matter didn’t the Rock lose to someone yesterday?

Congrats to Trevor Immelman on winning the Masters.

I am very excited about the upcoming World Hockey Championships in Halifax and Quebec City. Too bad the women lost though.

And a huge shout out to my boy Kevin Martin on breaking his jinx in international play. ^ TOP
